Adventures in resin

Last week I took the plunge. After seeing work done by two of my friends – Chrissy and Kerry – I’ve been dying to experiment so I took a little trip to this fibreglass specialist and picked up a kilo of clear casting polyester resin. I didn’t want to invest in supplies until I was sure this was something I’d do a lot of so for moulds I used ice cube trays that we had in the house (available from ikea) and some beer bottle tops. Using Kerry’s book called “Create your own resin jewellery” as guidance, I set to work.

Bear in mind that I haven’t done anything to these since they came out of the moulds as they’re still curing! I promise I’ll post more photographs once they’ve been sanded and finished. You can see all my work to date by clicking here to see my flickr set

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas…

This year I took part in a handmade Secret Santa through my favourite UK craft forum, Crafteroo. Officially I don’t know who my Santa was, but since there’s only one person I know who uses resin I think I can take a pretty good guess that it was the very lovely Kerry from Penny Dog Jewellery. This was the beautiful necklace I received featuring Alexander Henry’s tattoo fabric. As always, you can click on the image to see a larger version.

Kerry actually made me another necklace recently in exchange for some fabric offcuts that I’d sent her. I definitely came out of this swap for the better! Look how cute this choker is:

A very generous exchange

Kerry keeps a blog about her crafting endeavours and also sells her products via her etsy shop.

Yesterday my friend Chrissy gave me a lovely brooch that she had made, also from resin! She assures me that she’ll be opening a folksy store in the near future so I will keep you updated with when she does that. My friends know my tastes so well:

Additionally, as some of you will know I started a new job working in the evening way back in November. The result of this is that I have been absolutely floored with exhaustion after looking after the kids all day then heading to work at night and I’ve done very little by way of crafting. I went to work on Thursday and asked my lovely husband to make some cakes for a party the children and I were to attend yesterday, leaving him with this idea from Apryl. He did not too badly!

If you haven’t yet entered the competition for the Namaste needle case in the previous entry, do so now! I’ll be closing the competition on the 28th December 2008 and posting it to a randomly selected winner. Get in quick!
