Crochet is my nemesis

I can’t do it, and it’s a rare thing indeed for me to admit that I can’t do something. But I can’t do crochet! It just does not make sense to me.

Over on Ravelry, I noticed one of my friends had knit this bookmark and I decided that after two weeks of solid stocking stitch with DK cotton I’d try something a little more delicate. I managed four rows before I was foiled by crochet instructions.

Fail.

Ah well. I’ll show you the aforementioned two weeks worth of work as soon as I get good photos – I’m remarkably proud of it ;)

I want to cry when I try to make crochet work – why do people make it look so easy? I think they are taunting us knowing that they have sold their souls in exchange for the devil’s craft.

I know!! My gran is always crocheting at lightening speed whenever I visit and I keep meaning to ask for lessons but I just keep remembering other times I’ve tried and failed. Plus, I can’t even manage knitting and it’s got 2 needles to help me!

I can’t do it either!! Is it meant to look like a plate of spaghetti? Which stitch is it we’re meant to pick up? Why do I end up with yarn wrapped round my arm?

We could start an offshoot of SnB called ‘Crochet Recovery Anonymous’.

Maybe you should try straight forward crochet before mixing both knitting and crochet together. I can do both and that pattern scares me.

I can’t crochet either. And it doesn’t help that both the people I know who can (my mum and my mother in law) are both left handed, and that seems to make it had for me to get the hang of. I’ve occasionally managed to produce a few small things, mainly through repetition than anything, and I cannot work out patterns at all.

Crochet is easy. Really! If I can do it anyone can. I do think though that those who start with crochet have a better time of it than when knitters try crochet. I found the best book by far was The Happy Hooker – things that just didn’t make sense to me beforehand became totally obvious with the help of the explanatons and diagrams in the book. I would also reccommend starting with something a bit more simple! Best of luck!

Crochet is my nemesis too – being left handed, nobody can teach me. Argh!
