Bailey’s mittens

Bailey's mittens

This pattern creates a mitten that is approx 3 inches/8cm from tip to wrist, with folded cuff is 4 inches/10.5cm and with unfolded cuff is 5 inches/13cm. The unfolded cuff option serves two purposes – primarily, it will stop a fiddly baby from pulling the mittens off. Additionally it allows for growth so these mittens will have longevity! As a busy Mum of three (soon to be four) I am all for hats/scarves/gloves which have a long life.

I used my own hand-dyed bluefaced aran leicester to make these which gives a gauge of 5 stitches per inch. You will also need 5mm DPNs, 4mm DPNs and a darning needle (if you choose to use the sewn cast off). Please note that I switched to a self-coloured yarn to knit the ribbed cuff, I did this at the point where I changed to the 4mm needles.

Using Knitty’s magic cast on for socks and two 5mm double pointed needles, cast on 16 stitches.
Knit three rounds over the two DPNS in stocking stitch, remembering to pull your yarn tight at the end of each DPN and also remembering that your second DPN will require to be knit through the back of the loops on the first round.
(K4, M1) to end of round and spread your stitches between three DPNs (20 stitches)
Knit two rounds
(K5, M1) to end of round (24 stitches)
Knit nine rounds
(k4, K2tog) to end of round (20 stitches)
Knit two rounds
Change to 4mm DPNs for rib
Do 15 rounds as follows: (K2, P2) to end of round
Cast off (I followed this guide for the sewn cast off)

To finish: weave in any ends, knit an i-cord long enough to go through the arms of your coat and attach the ends inside the mitten approximately halfway up the cuff so your join will not be seen if the cuff is folded.
